The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences is looking for Postdoc/Research Scientist interventions in the social sciences

The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers four Bachelor and 15 Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

Mission

Within the Department of Education and Social Work, the post-doc/research scientist (maître assistant) will initiate and coordinate research activities, develop and organize third mission activities, and contribute to teaching, especially in the field of social and educational science methodology.

The holder of the position will initiate and organize collaborative and independent research projects. A central task is the generation of new research projects through the acquisition of third-party funding in collaboration with researchers in the field of the human, social, and educational sciences. The position further involves teaching in the domain of (mainly qualitative) social science methods and methodologies on the Bachelor and Master level. The post-doc/research scientist will furthermore strengthen existing as well as identify and establish new partnerships with social services and community services organisations as well as policy makers in the domain of psychosocial, educational and cultural services, thereby securing the university’s role in preparing welfare states for the challenges of the future. These goals are pursued by organizing participatory outreach activities as well as a yearly event which serves to create dialogue between academics, practitioners, policy makers and service users.

 

Your Role…

The post-doc/research scientist shall support research projects and the development of research projects in the social, human, and educational sciences on various levels. Active participation in research projects will be expected. Also, the holder of the position shall establish and mobilize contacts with practitioners, policy makers, cultural organizations and civil society actors in the field of social/community services and design participatory third mission initiatives. The position holder’s prior experiences with participatory and outreach activities shall serve to improve the understanding of science within policy, practice, and the public. For Bachelor and Master students, the post-doc/research scientist will offer introduction and guidance to questions of research design, methodology and the application of qualitative research methods.

The following general tasks are included in the responsibilities of the post doc/research scientist:

  • concerning research
  • Contributing to the coordination and quality management of the DESW research mission
  • Identifying, applying for and managing research funding
  • Conducting, on own initiative, research and/or develop own research projects in a specific scientific area
  • Collecting and analysing research data
  • Disseminating results at international scientific conferences/workshops
  • Writing up research findings and support the development of scientific articles for publication and dissemination
  • concerning teaching
    • Teaching in the qualitative methodology curriculum in BA and MA programmes (preferably in French)
    • Contributing to the improvement of the curriculum
  • concerning outreach
  • Identifying and establishing new collaborative partnerships with social services and community services organisations as well as policymakers in the domain of social, educational and cultural policy
  • Establishing a yearly event facilitating the exchange between academics, practitioners, policy makers and service users; potentially developing technological platforms facilitating the exchange between scholars and stakeholders
What we expect from you…
  • PhD in the social, human or related sciences
  • Experience in independent research grant writing
  • Experience as PI of scientific research projects
  • Proven experience with outreach/third mission projects and participatory methodologies
  • Experience in teaching social scientific curricula, especially methods & methodology
  • International and multilingual research experience
  • Very good oral and written competences preferably in French, German, and English.
  • Great communication skills
  • Insight into Luxembourg’s psychosocial services, community services and/or cultural services sector is an advantage
  • Commitment, ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team, interpersonal skills and a critical mind
