Postdoc / Research Assistant Arabic Digital Humanities, to work on the data science analysis of classical Arabic encyclopedias
The University of Utrecht seeks a postdoctoral Researcher/Research Assistant in Arabic Digital Humanities. We seek a candidate that has intermediate/advanced programming skills, experience in data visualization, a fundamental grasp of Machine Learning concepts, and intermediate/advanced reading skills in Arabic. Web development experience is a plus. The postdoctoral Researcher/Research Assistant will be expected to add new corpora and functionalities to an existing tool, Arabic BlackLab external link, and to work on the data science analysis of classical Arabic encyclopedias under the supervision of Professor C.R. Lange.
Qualifications
Responsibilities:
- digital corpus preparation and maintenance;
- generating various visualizations, e.g., word embeddings, networks, and so forth;
- developing Digital Humanities tools for the web;
- if applicable, publishing findings in a paper.
Education/skill requirements:
- acquaintance with Arabic language and literature and with software engineering/data science;
- fundamental knowledge of Machine Learning concepts. Actual project experience is a plus;
- fundamental knowledge of statistical concepts;
- intermediate knowledge of Python. Preference is given to advanced Python developers.
Desired qualifications:
- experience in text mining;
- experience in web development frameworks such as React is a major plus;
- experience in Machine Learning frameworks is a major plus, e.g., Word2Vec, TensorFlow, Gensim, PyTorch, etc.;
- experience in data visualization frameworks such as Matplotlib and D3 is a major plus.
Offer
We offer a temporary position (0.5 FTE) for a period of six months. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience – ranges between €3,561 and €4,490 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
