Veterinarian/Animal welfare officer will contribute to the health and welfare of the laboratory animals and use of animals in experiments

At the University of Groningen, a combined position has become available for the position of Veterinarian and Animal welfare officer. The University of Groningen is looking for a veterinarian who can also carry out tasks in the position of animal welfare officer. These positions are described in Article 14.1 and Article 13f.3.a of the Experiments on Animals Act.
Together with two colleagues, the veterinarian will contribute to the health and welfare of the laboratory animals and to the responsible use of animals in experiments, in the broadest possible sense.
The UG will provide a tailor-made and extensive training and supervision programme.

This position is organizationally placed under the Office of the University. This position is accountable to the President of the Board of the University in his role as permit holder, in accordance with Article 2 of the Experiments on Animals Act.

Our new colleague will issue advice to:

• the Animal Welfare Body at the University of Groningen
• the management team of the Linnaeusborg animal facility (for life sciences and ecological research) and the Central Animal Facility (for pharmacological and UMCG research)
• researchers, with respect to the health and welfare of laboratory animals and the implementation of animal experiments.

Qualifications

We are looking for a qualified veterinarian with:

• a practical mindset and an open and facilitating attitude
• the motivation to achieve the best for laboratory animals (rodents, birds, fish) and for research
• the ambition to play a powerful role in dialogue with other involved parties
• good spoken and written communication skills in Dutch (at least level B2 of the CEFR after one year) and English (level C1 of the CEFR)
• an affinity with teaching, to train students and researchers in regard to their role in animal experiments
• curiosity and energy to gain relevant, specialist knowledge in the areas of laboratory animal medicine and laboratory animal science.

Organisation

The University of Groningen (UG) holds a permit to conduct animal experiments for the purposes of academic research and teaching. Together with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the UG maintains two laboratory animal facilities, within which animal experiments are carried out and animals are being bred. Animal testing is also conducted outside on free living animals. Within the two animal testing facilities, laboratory animals are bred as well as raised. The research conducted is both fundamental and applied, involving a broad range of topics. Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 4,629 and € 5,943 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position
• an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus over the annual gross income
• an appointment initially offered for a period of one year. After a positive evaluation, the appointment may be converted into a permanent one. An appointment of less than 1.0 FTE may be discussed.

The position does not involve weekend or evening hours. Holiday leave must be scheduled in consultation with colleagues.
