One or two Postdoctoral Fellowship(s) in membrane biophysics is available in the group of Prof. Andreas Carlson at the Mechanics Division at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. No one can be appointed twice as a Postdoctoral Fellow financed with funds from The Research Council of Norway (NFR). The fellowships will be for a period of 3 years.

The employment relationship is conditional and dependent on a signed contract between UiO and the Research Council of Norway.

Starting date no later than 01.10.2022.

One or two 3-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship(s) is/are available at the Department of Mathematics, Section for Mechanics at the University of Oslo (UiO). The positions are part of large interdisciplinary projects funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Life Science Initiative at UiO, which focuses on the development of mathematical models and numerical simulations of cell membrane dynamics. More specifically, it will address the basic mechanochemical processes that regulate one of the most fundamental communication pathways in cell biology – the encapsulation and internalization of liquid and transmembrane cargo at intracellular membranes. The Postdoctoral Fellow(s) will be part of the group of Prof. Andreas Carlson (https://acarlson-uio.github.io), where the work will be conducted in close collaboration with experimental cell biologists and bio-chemists at UiO and Oslo University Hospital.

The Postdoctoral Fellow(s) will:

  • Develop and solve numerically biophysical models of the double-membrane wrapping process in autophagy.
  • Work in close collaboration with experimentalists in cell biology and bio-chemistry.
  • Join a research group with broad expertise in mechanics, physics and biophysics.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in biophysics, mechanics, fluid mechanics, physics or applied mathematics.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Good social and collaboration skills and ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary scientific environment.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research and knowledge of basic methods in membrane modelling, biophysics, numerical simulations of PDE’s or interfacial fluid mechanics is highly beneficial.

We offer

  • Salary NOK 534400 – 615800 per year depending on qualifications in position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow (position code 1352)
  • Attractive welfare benefits and a generous pension agreement
  • Vibrant international academic environment
  • Career development programmes
  • Oslo’s family-friendly surroundings with their rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities
  • Possibility to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse research team

How to apply

The application must include

  • Cover letter including a description of scientific interests and the motivation for applying for the position (max. 1 page)
  • CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work – scientific publications)
  • Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records
  • List of publications (including pre-prints)
  • Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)

The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system. Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University’s grading system. Please note that all documents should be in English (or a Scandinavian language).

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented, academic qualifications as well as the candidates motivation and personal suitability. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged.
