The position is in the Graphics Group (graphics.cs.lth.se), which is a part of the Department of Computer Science. The Graphics Group has a long history of internationally recognized research in the areas of Real-Time Rendering, Graphics Hardware and Ray Tracing. The Group has collaborations both internationally and locally, with both industry and universities, in particular a long-standing collaboration with the Nvidia Graphics Research group in Lund.

The Department of Computer Science has a wide range of research spanning Software Engineering empirical research, Software Development in programming languages and tools, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Natural Language Processing, Embedded Systems and Theoretical Computer Science.

Being a doctoral student 

As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. 

As a doctoral student, you will be trained in a scientific approach. In short, you will be trained to think critically and analytically, to solve problems independently using the right methods, and to develop an awareness of research ethics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, to develop your leadership and pedagogical skills. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies end with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

Subject description

This project aims to develop novel algorithms for Neural Rendering for Computer Graphics and Real-Time Rendering. By using ANNs, coded for high-performance on cross-vendor GPUs, we aim to create new techniques for global illumination and material models. The subject works with GPU programming using graphics APIs and neural accelerator programming languages. This project is part of the ELLIIT Excellence Center.

Work duties

You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral programme, which includes participation in research projects as well as third cycle courses, seminars and conferences. 

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

The work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area. 
  • Teaching in the second and third cycles. 
  • Collaboration with industry. 

Qualifications 

To be eligible for admission and employment as a doctoral student, you must fulfil the requirements below.

Admission requirements 

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if the applicant: 

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or 
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or 
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A person meets the specific admission requirements for third cycle studies in Computer Science if the applicant has: 

  • at least 60 second-cycle credits at an advanced level (M.Sc. level courses) that are relevant for this topic, or 
  • M.Sc. degree within Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information and communication Technology, Engineering Physics or Engineering Mathematics. 

Additional requirements

In order to complete the doctoral programme in question, the following are also required: 

  • good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems. 
  • good written and oral communication skills
  • good ability to cooperate
  • good knowledge of English, spoken and written
  • C/C++ and GPU programming experience (CUDA, DX, Vulkan)  

Other qualifications 

For the doctoral programme in question, experience in any of the following is not required, but considered beneficial for your application: 

  • Experience working with Real-Time Rendering
  • Experience working with Deep Learning
  • Familiarity with Computer Graphics research

About the employment 

The employment is a fixed-term employment at full time, starting as soon as possible by agreement,  however no later than 2026-12-15. Third cycle studies at LTH consist of full-time studies for 4 years. In the case of teaching and other departmental duties, the employment is extended accordingly. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
