The Soft Robotics for human cooperation and rehabilitation (SoftBots) Laboratory of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is seeking for one highly motivated Fellow researcher (holding a master degree).
The SoftBots Lab is known for its cutting-edge research in the areas of collaborative robotics, human-robot interaction and collaboration, teleoperation, and assistive robotics.
The successful candidate will be involved in a joint research activity between IIT SoftBots and the Control and Automation Lab from Università degli Studi di Bergamo.
The main goal of the activity is to develop and applying health monitoring algorithms to robotic systems. Such algorithms are based on measures of physical quantities of the systems (such as current and position/velocity) including possible additional sensors (i.e. accelerometers) and provide information about the state of health of the system (or its components) through the value of a health variable.
These algorithms can be developed in different ways, such as via purely data-driven methods, mostly based on statistical learning theory, machine learning or system identification theory; signal based methods, that exploit some peculiar features (“the shape”) of typical and repetitive measurements, or alternatively, by applying model bases methods, based on accurate simulation models (“digital twins”) of the machine/component.
Health monitoring algorithms can provide information for the predictive maintenance of the system and its components most prone to wear and/or malfunctioning. Moreover, they allow to compute the Remaining Useful Life of some components and to design control algorithms that can adapt their behavior to faults (fault tolerant control) or to efficiency decreases in actuators or other components (condition adaptive control). The combination of health monitoring techniques and a robotic system view may allow to reduce the risks by e.g. careful planning and/or redistributing efforts in redundant system.
Methods to increase robustness and reliability can be devised both from a hardware and a software perspective. This includes the characterization of the performance, fault diagnosis and life cycle analysis of robotic platforms based on novel actuation concepts (e.g. SEA, VSA, VIA).
Required qualifications:
• Master degree in robotics, automation and control engineering.
• Knowledge of control tools, e.g. Matlab, Simulink.
• Knowledge of programming languages (Python, C++).
• Good communication skills and ability to integrate within a multidisciplinary team.
• Creative, proactive and collaborative attitude.
• English language skills (written and oral).
Desired qualifications:
• Knowledge of ROS programming.
• Knowledge of motor drivers and power PCB design.
• Knowledge of sensing devices (e.g. position, force/torque), their properties and applications.
• Knowledge of CAD system for robotic design (e.g. Creo).
• Confidence with version control tools (specifically git).
Please submit your application (including a detailed CV, university transcripts, cover letter outlining motivation, experience and qualifications for the post and contact information of 2 references) using the online form.
