Luleå University of Technology experiences rapid growth with world-class expertise within several research domains. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results. Drawing on our location in the Arctic region, we create global societal benefit. Our research is carried out in close collaboration with companies such as LKAB, Ericsson, Boliden, ABB and Epiroc and with leading universities around the world. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of SEK 1.8 billion. We are today 1,770 members of staff and have 17,200 students.
In the coming years, investments amounting to many billions will be made in large projects in the regions of Norrbotten and Västerbotten in Northern Sweden. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and offers a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand.
The subject of Energy Engineering at the Division of Energy Science belongs to the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics, which is a factually wide institution with many successful teams, recognized education programs and appreciated teachers. At the subject of Energy Engineering we work closely with companies/industries in both research and student projects. The research conducted has high international standards, and we collaborate with researchers around the world.
The Division of Energy Science at Luleå University of Technology has an open PhD position in the subject of Energy Engineering. Your research studies will focus on CO2 absorption and electro-reduction to CO.
SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Energy engineering includes the development of technologies and processes for a sustainable energy supply. The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy efficient use in industry and society.
DUTIES
As a PhD student you will work for a doctoral degree as the final goal, according to the goals specified in the Higher Education Ordinance. In parallel with your thesis work, you will also develop your general skills by taking courses as part of research education.
This project is a four-year research project, cooperating with the institute of SWERIM, the company of SMA Mineral in Sweden and the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) in China. The overall aim of the project is to develop a novel process to capture CO2 from production industries and convert CO2 to CO as the target product. The work covers screening and synthesizing of ionic liquids as well as testing performance and developing process.
Within the PhD research project, we will 1) develop bio-ionic liquids with the help of theoretical screening, including CORMO-RS; 2) developing process combined with proof-of-concept via real-gas testing, including CO2 capture, CO2 conversion via electro-reduction, and real gas testing.
QUALIFICATIONS
In order to be eligible you must have a degree of Master of Science in chemical engineering, material science, energy engineering, or similar specializations. The candidate should have a good knowledge of the English language and good oral and written proficiency. It is desirable that the candidate has a strong interest in developing technology on CO2 electro-reduction. We value a candidate who likes to work in a team but can also take the initiative on his/her own. We see it as an advantage if the candidate has research experience on ionic liquids for CO2 capture and electrochemical conversion.
