The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. One of the basic ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thus a closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted in medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neurooncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Parts of the business are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology and hospital physics at the University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in a number of program programs and master’s programs within the Faculty of Medicine as well as a number of programs in the field of technical-natural science. The department has a turnover of around SEK 450 million, of which just over half is external research grants. The number of employees is about 500, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 700 active in the workforce. Work description
The applicant will be responsible for a project concerning the structural determination of proteins in complex with chemical substances of the category “small molecular weight compounds”. Purified,
recombinant protein preparations are analyzed in combination with substances, by cryo-electron
microscopy, or other types of structural analyses.” The project includes planning of protein production (which is carried out in collaboration with a protein purification facility), and  analysis of the preparations with liquid chromatography. Furthermore, planning for substance synthesis performed commercially, and further optimization of conditions that enable structure determination primarily via cryo-EM. The cryo-EM work will be carried out with the support of the cryo-EM National SciLifeLab Facility (see https://www.scilifelab.se/units/cryo-em/). Other methods for structural determination may be relevant. The overall goal of the project is to identify and characterize substances that can inhibit excessive blood vessel leakage.

The applicant is overall responsible for detailed planning and implementation of the project as well as problem solving. The project ends with data compilation, and oral and written presentations.

Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in “a subject relating to structural biology. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Additional qualifications

  • Doctoral degree and education at an international level on a topic that is relevant to the project.
  • The applicant must have extensive experience in structural determination, primarily through cryo-EM.
  • The applicant must have extensive experience and skills in relevant (bio) chemical analysis methods.
  • The applicant must have the capacity to be able to organize the planning and execution of the project, to selfmotivate and solve problems.
  • It is an advantage if the applicant has published scientific articles in leading international journals as the first author.
  • The applicant must have documented experience and proficiency in oral and written presentation in English.

The employment is a temporary position according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date December 1st 2021. Placement: Uppsala.
