Online communication is often regarded as promoting conflict rather than cooperation: people are disinhibited (Suler, 2004), disagreements escalate very easily (Roos et al., 2020), and bipolarization seems inevitable (Kiesler et al., 1984). In these studies, however, it is often very difficult to disentangle which factor causes this: structural and strategic factors are intertwined with conversational factors, both of which can be related to the affordances and limitations of the medium. Features of online communication (e.g., isolation, anonymity) can result in reduced accountability and more direct and disinhibited communication (strategic factors; see the SIDE model; Spears & Lea, 1994; Spears, Lea & Postmes, 2001) with deleterious consequences (disinhibition, flaming, trolling, etc.). At the same time aspects of the online medium, even when virtual rather than text-based, can disrupt conversational flow (e.g., due to time lags), undermining the normal nuances of FtF communication (Koudenburg et al., 2013; 2017; Roos et al., 2020).

The project starts from the observation that in recent decades precarious work has been increasing across European labour markets enhanced by developments such as labour market flexibilization and the raise of platform work. This project first seeks to uncover variation in the development of the different dimensions of precarious work across European economies and over time in relation to collective labor arrangements and declining trade union membership rates. Second, it aims to explore to what extent different types of bargaining strategies for sectorial collective labor agreements might be more or less effective in addressing the issue of precarious work. The project brings together historical and sociological insights using a combination of quantitative and qualitative empirical strategies.

PhD position 1: Subcritical annealing of martensitic chromium steel on metal forming
Metal forming is a widely used method to form steel products efficient in mass manufacturing. As steel is highly recyclable its usage helps in creating a more sustainable world. A special group of steels are the martensitic stainless steels. This material is used for metal parts that need to be strong, corrosion and wear resistant. Current trend in metal forming is to form more and smaller details in a robust way by using multiple metal forming steps. Especially in small (micro) parts where the relation between material thickness and product size is large, the use of additional annealing steps give possibilities to extend the metal forming borders. The forming characteristics of the material after annealing are dependent on temperature, time and strains applied in the first steps. Yield strength, strain hardening behavior and anisotropy are all material parameters that are influencing the forming process. A thorough understanding of the material behavior and its sensitiveness is essential to predict the interaction of metal forming steps with the Finite Element Method and to design a robust metal forming process. This project will focus on the material behavior itself. Parallel to this project a second project is defined to create an implementation of the constitutive material model for the use in an industrial environment.

Dit doe je op verschillende gebieden. Op individueel niveau door te sturen op het uitvoeren van de rol zoals deze omschreven staat in het handboek. Op teamniveau door het team te sturen op een eenduidige werkwijze. Je maakt hierbij gebruik van je motiverend vermogen en algemene technische kennis. Het is hierbij van belang dat je aansluit bij de bestaande processen en werkwijzen die binnen B&O, Vastgoed en de overige stakeholders van de RUG gehanteerd worden.

Als Assistent Controller werk je in het financiële hart van de faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid. Such tandem cells are envisaged as one of the most promising applications of these fascinating new materials. The development of suitable, highly efficient perovskite sub-cells is a challenge and requires a thorough understanding of the workings of perovskite devices.

This project is partially funded by Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland (SNN) and the European Union, aiming to the development of a highly efficient and stable mid-scale alkaline electrolyser to be demonstrated at the Eelde Airport, Groningen. The WaviatER project is expected to play a crucial role for the transformation of the Northern Netherlands to a key region for green hydrogen production. In this context, the postdoc will work at the University of Groningen but in close collaboration with DEMCON, focusing on electrocatalytic materials development, cell validation and characterization as well as evaluation of possible degradation phenomena.
