This position is based in the Integrated Plant Protection unit of the Department of Plant Protection Biology at SLU. Our department, is an interdisciplinary constellation, encompassing Chemical Ecology, Resistance Biology and Integrated Plant Protection research units, providing excellent opportunities for strong research collaboration within and outside the department. Research efforts at the department are directed towards both fundamental and applied research. Applied plant protection research is carried out in collaboration with industry and focuses primarily on the development of environmentally sustainable pest and disease control strategies for agriculture and horticulture, both in Sweden and internationally.

Genomic screening of traits for increased seed yield in red clover

Description:

The goal of the long-term food strategy for Sweden is to strengthen competitiveness and to ensure the potential of Swedish food production is fully realised to the benefit of actors and stakeholders throughout the entire food supply chain. The overall purpose of the project is to contribute to streamlining plant breeding for seed yield in red clover, an important protein-rich forage crop in Sweden. One challenge in red clover seed production is extreme variation in seed yield. In red clover, the seed yield is affected by many factors, including access to pollinators, cultivation-related factors and genotypic differences (e.g. ploidy). The aim of the project is to find stable links between seed yield and genomic data that can be used in future breeding programs based on genomic selection. The project is a collaboration between three departments at SLU (in Alnarp and Umeå) and industry funded by SLU Grogrund (Centre for Breeding of Food Crops). The work will be centred around phenotyping of plant traits in field and greenhouse studies as well as genetic analyses.

Qualifications:

The candidate should hold an MSc degree in biology or equivalent. Previous experiences in genetics, plant breeding, pollination biology, work with plants in the greenhouse or field, molecular biology, bioinformatics and programming in R are merits. Candidates should be fluent in spoken and written English. The candidate must be capable of independent work and also be interested in the link between academia and industry. As a person you are enthusiastic and responsible, and have excellent collaborative skills. Applicants that hold a driving license will be evaluated favorably.
