At the headquarters in Greifswald – Insel Riems, the Institute of Molecular Virology and Cell Biology (IMVZ) has the following vacancies

doctoral position (m/f/d)

in the project ” Cell and immunobiology of viral encephalitides “. The position is temporary for 36 month and is offered as a part-time position with 65% of the regular weekly working time (currently 25.35 hours).

Tasks:

Within the framework of the project “Cell and immunobiology of viral encephalitides”, the post holder will undertake research tasks on the cell biological and immunological basis of infection of the peripheral and central nervous system by herpes and rabies viruses. For this purpose, neuroinvasion as well as resulting host reactions will be characterised in the mouse animal model by means of 3D imaging approaches (light-sheet and confocal laser scanning microscopy) and quantitative bioinformatic image analyses. Highly neuroinvasive virus strains will be compared with specifically produced virus mutants. In addition to imaging-based methods, mechanisms of virus control and immune barriers in the central nervous system will be investigated in combination with other immunological and proteomic approaches.

Requirements:

  • University degree in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or related subjects
  • Willingness to carry out experimental work on animals

Advantageous are:

  • Knowledge of fluorescence microscopy
  • Knowledge of image analysis
  • Expertise in the fields of molecular biology, infection biology, neurobiology, cell biology or biochemistry demonstrated by diploma or master thesis
  • Experience with animal experiments (FELASA course)

A high level of motivation, good work organisation, an independent and flexible way of working and the ability to work in a team are required.

The job may involve working in a biosecurity environment, which requires a security clearance according to the Security Clearance Act (Sicherheitsüberprüfungsgesetz, SÜG) and special protective measures against health hazards. Menatal and physical suitability is therefore a prerequisite for filling the position.
