Open PhD position within the Collaborative Research Center SFB-Transregio 353 “Regulation of decisions in cell death processes”

An excellent opportunity is available for a PhD position in a DFG-funded project on cell death and inflammatory signaling during intracellular infection. The Ebert Lab is dedicated to deciphering host-pathogen interactions related to cell death and inflammatory responses and identifying novel therapeutic targets. The project will investigate the relevance and role of some key cellular molecules in the decision-making of infected cells to survive or induce different cell death modalities and related inflammation. The PhD will investigate involved cellular processes using bacterial and viral in vitro and in vivo infection models. The studies will be performed under world-class equipped BSL-2 and BSL-3 conditions, applying state-of-the-art techniques including life cell and confocal imaging as well as (phospho-)proteomics, next to more classical approaches such as biochemical analysis and cytokine multiplexing.

The Department of Computer Science, Technical University of Munich, has a vacancy for a PhD candidate/researcher position in the area of efficient algorithms. The position is hosted at the Chair of Algorithms and Complexity, headed by Prof. Susanne Albers (http://wwwalbers.in.tum.de/index.html.en). The dissertation work will involve research in the fields of approximation and online algorithms, algorithmic game theory or algorithm engineering.

The position is paid according to the German public salary scale TVL-13 and provides a competitive salary with standard benefits. The initial appointment is for a period of two years and can be renewed for another two years.

The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree in computer science or mathematics. Since the position involves teaching obligations, very good proficiency in German is required. PhD position (f/m/d) in the field of apoptosis regulation during viral infections of the liver

In a DFG-funded project on cell death signaling in virus-infected hepatocytes we are characterizing determinants of apoptosis execution after death receptor stimulation during viral infections of the liver. The focus of the project is on metabolic changes of hepatocytes after viral infection with adenoviruses, LCMV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the cross-talk with apoptosis signaling. As mitochondria are centrally involved in cell death pathways a main focus is on characterizing mitochondrial changes during infection. The research group Wohlleber is looking for a PhD student to investigate the cellular processes using cutting edge techniques like high-parametric flow cytometry, (phospho-)proteomics, metabolomics analysis and classical biochemical assays.

PhD position | Sustainable Energy Materials | Electrochemistry

We test novel catalysts for sustainable energy conversion processes such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells or electrolyzers, H2O2 production, or electrochemical CO2 reduction. To do so, the stability of newly developed catalysts is of pressing concern. You will continue our research line around stability assessment of novel catalysts by electrochemical flow cell measurements that will be coupled to on-line analytics (c.f. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-019-0555-5). Specifically, an in-house designed flow cell is coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the stability against dissolution will be assessed. This will be done with collaboration partners around the world. The workflow spans from analytical chemistry to material science and engineering. There is no need for previous knowledge in the described fields but a strong motivation to learn and push the boundaries of our current knowledge further. We are looking for an individu-al with a high willingness to take initiative and motivation to start her/his career at TUM.

The group of Carbon composite researches sustainable, green thermosets for high-performance applications with state-of-the-art novel green thermosets based on biogenic materials. Located at the Chair of Carbon Composites, TUM School of Engineering and Design, Technical University of Munich, we offer a motivating research environment in a multidisciplinary laboratory in one of the highest-ranked universities in Europe. A fundamental transition is required from fossil-based polymers to renewable resources and alter the concept of one-time use to continuously up-cycle, down-cycle or recycle polymeric materials. Most of the plastics that are recycled currently go through mechanical and thermal processing to re-make other plastic products, e.g., thermoplastics such as PE, PP, and PET. Thermosetting plastics and resins cannot be easily chemically or mechanically recycled. The recycling scheme for those structures is always challenging having negative economic and environmental impacts.

Post Doc in Hydrological Modeling of Alpine Catchments

Job description: This postdoc project focuses on the quantification of climate change impact on groundwater stor-age in high Alpine catchments based on a combined experimental modelling approach (the re-tained model is WaSiM). The work aims at answering the question how the role of groundwater stor-age for high Alpine water resources will evolve under ongoing climate change, based on detailed analyses of the three selected case studies. This will be achieved by further developing existing hy-drological modelling approaches with the main focus of improving the representation of surface wa-ter – ground water exchanges in high alpine environments. Detailed field data will be used to calibrate this model and achieve the best possible representation of the studied system. The developed model will be used to investigate how the relative role of subsurface water storage as compared to above ground water storage in snow and ice will evolve in a warming climate.

The Schirmer lab is part of the ZIEL – Institute for Food & Health at the Technical University of Munich and located in Freising-Weihenstephan. The research of our lab focuses on the human microbiome, especially gut microbes, and investigates potential mechanisms of host-microbial interactions in health and disease. We are particular interested in the role of the microbiome in inflammatory and auto-immune diseases and how hormone-microbiome interactions impact female health. To address these questions, we use integrated multi-omics analyses (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metabolomics) combined with the subsequent isolation of the strains in the lab to study these mechanisms.

We are looking for a motivated Ph.D. student or post-doc interested in developing novel processes that boost the production of bio-based liquid fuels and other chemicals through electrical energy supplied to electrochemical / electro-biotechnological reactor concepts. Der Wandel von konventionellen, fossilen Energieträgern hin zu alternativen Energieträgern sowie die Erhöhung der Energieeffizienz in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft sind zentrale Trends mit herausragender Bedeutung und immenser Tragweite für die Zukunft Deutschlands und Europas. Wo digitale Lösungen als intelligente Systeme vielfach Energieeffizienz erhöhen können, ist die Nutzung von Wasserstoff ein vieldiskutierter prominenter Ansatz für den Einsatz alternativer Energieträger. Im Rahmen mehrerer Projekte in diesen Bereichen sollen Potentiale und konkrete Lösungsmöglichkeiten für den Einsatz digitaler Lösungen sowie alternativer Energieträger wie Wasserstoff und die damit einhergehenden Veränderungen in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft erforscht werden. So sollen für Rechenzentren und Asphaltmischwerke als besondere Einsatzszenarien Grundlagen für ein nachhaltiges Energiemanagement wie eine systematische Übersicht relevanter Anspruchsgruppen und ihrer Bedürfnisse sowie Konzepte digitaler Lösungen entwickelt werden. Zudem sollen Möglichkeiten der Geschäftsmodellinnovation in der Wasserstoffwirtschaft untersucht werden. Insbesodnere ist es Ziel, Werkzeuge zur Gestaltung von Geschäftsmodellen, auch zur automatisierten Analyse, zu entwickeln.

Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter – Promotion – Elektrochemie

Wir testen neue Katalysatoren für nachhaltige Energiewandlungsprozesse wie Polymer-Elektrolyt-Brennstoffzellen oder Elektrolyseure, der H2O2-Produktion oder der elektrochemischen CO2-Reduktion. Dafür ist die Stabilität der neu entwickelten Katalysatoren von großer Bedeutung. In deiner Promotion wirst du nachhaltige Energiematerialien charakterisieren, wie sie z.B. in Wasserstoffbrennstoffzellen verwendet werden (vgl. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-019-0555-5). Eine in-house entwickelte Flusszelle wird mit inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry gekoppelt und die Stabilität verschiedener Katalysatoren wird bewertet. Dies wird in Zusammenarbeit mit Partnern auf der ganzen Welt geschehen. Der Workflow reicht von der analytischen Chemie bis hin zur Materialwissenschaft und Ingenieurwissenschaft. Es besteht kein Bedarf an Vorwissen in den beschriebenen Bereichen, aber eine starke Motivation zu lernen und die Grenzen unseres derzeitigen Wissens weiter zu verschieben.

Postdoctoral Position: Multiphysics simulations for geodynamics on heterogeneous exascale systems

The BMBF-funded position is part of the CoMPS project, which is a multidisciplinary project combining the fields of mathematics, computer science, geophysics, and high-performance computing.
It aims to improve the performance of the matrix-free finite-element-based framework HyTeG, in particular by techniques for data reduction through surrogate operators. Furthermore, we aim to extend the framework with mixed-precision approaches, which will be implemented and analyzed.
Secondly, we aim at a volume coupling of the high-performance packages waLBerla, HyTeG, and MesaPD to solve complex multiphysics problems. The coupling is done across package boundaries. This also requires more sophisticated approaches in load-balancing.
Finally, the newly developed algorithms will be tested and verified with applications from geodynamics.
