The law requires scientists to argue that the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refine-ment) have been maximized, i.e. that the same benefits could not have been achieved with lower impact on animal welfare. International studies show considerable inconsistency as to how Animal Ethics Commissions and their individual members evaluate animal protocols. As long as inconsistencies remain poorly understood and opaque, they can be a source of decreased confidence of society in the decision-making process. Postdoc Position in Tracer Hydrogeology and Modelling
The focus of the research project is the improvement of the conceptual and quantitative understanding of surface water-groundwater interactions via state-of-the-art tritium measurement techniques and integrated surface-subsurface hydrological modelling. The successful candidate will be tasked with the measurement and analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of tritium in the river Rhine and in a large near-river groundwater wellfield in the vicinity of Basel, Switzerland, which is characterized by complex geology and where Rhine river water is used for managed aquifer recharge. The goal is to develop a combined tritium measurement and modelling method that allows the quantification of groundwater flow and mixing at near-river drinking water wellfields.

PhD Opportunity in Biomedical Ethics (Pre-hospital Triage)
The COVID-19 pandemic has been raising several ethical questions around the use of limited medical resources in emergency situations and beyond. In Switzerland, ethical guidelines have been developed on how to triage patients in hospitals, in case the risk emerges that extensive medical care cannot be provided to all patients who need it (resource scarcity). However, there is less information on how to deal with prehospital triage decisions, and on the impact of decision-making in times of scarce resources on older persons, a segment of society that has been particularly affected by COVID-19. Using a mixed-method approach, including a survey with older patients from geriatric clinics and interviews with professionals, the current project is aimed at filling these two gaps.

PhD Position in Organic Geochemistry and Paleolimnology
The abundance and distribution of different types of microalgae impact carbon cycling, water quality, and aquatic food webs. One of the best ways to understand and predict how algae will respond to future perturbations to aquatic environments is to analyze the ways they have reacted to the diverse conditions that have existed over geologic time. As a consequence, we must rely on indirect indicators – proxies – of past ecologic and environmental change. This PhD project aims to apply novel proxies based on algal lipid biomarkers and their stable isotopic composition to record changes in algal biodiversity caused by both natural variability and human activities, with a particular focus on the environmental impacts of ancient Roman settlements. Towards this goal, the PhD student will analyse sedimentary records spanning the past ~15000 years from lakes in Switzerland and New York state. The PhD student will participate in fieldtrips to collect sediment cores from lakes in the Swiss Plateau and in central New York. The project involves extensive laboratory work with a focus on biomarker purification and stable isotope analyses. Depending on the interests and background of the student, they will also have the opportunity to analyze ancient algal DNA from sediments.

The successful candidate will be integrated with the systems administration team of sciCORE and contribute to development and feature extensions of JupyterHub and similar frameworks for interactive scientific computing in both research and teaching contexts. Further developments in support of web applications such as Shiny and Flask/Dash and related container and repository technologies are also expected. Hands-on assistance and the development of templates and documentation for the user community will be an important aspect of this role. The technical development and maintenance of these and other sciCORE services will be conducted as part of the sciCORE team. Coordination with lecturers and researchers regarding effective use of these services will be a collaborative effort with the Center for Data Analytics (CeDA), Research and Infrastructure Support for humanities and social sciences (RISE), and Educational Technologies.
