PostDoc Position: Innovative Computational Methods for the Joint Analysis of Single-Cell & Spatial Omics Data (m/f/d)

Project: The role of cells in the tissue is largely defined by their differential gene expression, which unfolds both in space and in time. The methods recording this structural information, known as Spatial Transcriptomics (ST) suffer from low transcriptomic resolution, and are prohibitively expensive to perform at scale. Conversely, single-cell RNA sequencing is a mature, cost-effective technology that captures more RNA transcripts and identifies individual cells adequately. This transformative project seeks to bridge the gap between ST and scRNA-seq and to incorporate information on gene-regulatory activity via scATAC-seq. We will utilize novel and innovative algorithms based on a complex interplay of deep neural networks. The focus of TUM in this collaborative project will be to develop new computational methods and software tools to decipher location-specific gene-regulatory mechanisms, with the aim of unraveling how tissues form and change over time and space.

PhD project on synthesis and characterization of LMR-NCM cathode active materials with controllable particle size and its effect on gassing and cycle performance

Li- and Mn-rich layered oxides (LMR-NCMs) offer high specific capacities at relatively low raw material costs. However, their loss of mean discharge voltage over cycling and still insufficient capacity retention are hindering their commercial use. Furthermore, this class of materials suffers from low round-trip energy efficiency, due to a pronounced open circuit voltage (OCV) hysteresis, and from significant gassing during cycling, which in large-format cells can lead to significant self-heating and cell rupturing, respectively. The goal of this project is (1) to synthesize cathode active materials (CAMs) with controllable, monodispersed particle size and (2) to study the effect of precursors and CAMs morphology/size on gassing and cycle performance, with the final aim at improving and optimizing the long-term cycling stability of LMR-NCM cathodes. This will be achieved through advanced chemical, physical and electrochemical diagnostics and benchmarking of CAMs, in collaboration with BASF SE.

Ph.D. student or Post-Doc (f/m/d) for Conceptual design of an electrochemical reactor for the sustainable production of renewable fuels

The Laboratory of Chemical Process Engineering at TUM’s Campus in Straubing is looking as soon as possible for a motivated Ph.D. student or post-doc interested in developing novel processes that boost the production of bio-based liquid fuels and other chemicals through electrical energy supplied to electrochemical / electro-biotechnological reactor concepts. Such concepts aim at replacing fossil raw materials in value-added chains. The advertised position is part of a large cooperation project with partners from industry and academia. The candidate will measure and model data on the reaction kinetics and mass transfer in reactive chemical systems. A reactor concept is developed with two other research groups at the TUM Campus Straubing, specializing in electrochemical processes. The final goal is to build a demonstrator on the mini-plant scale.

PostDoc position: Molecular engineering of a novel type of genetically encoded RNA delivery vehicle

Within the ‘Chair of Developmental Genetics’, our group combines cutting-edge cell and protein engineering methods for developing novel molecular tools to precisely manipulate the genome and transcriptome of cells and organisms. We apply these tools to various disease models ranging from cell lines and patient-derived stem cells to mouse models. In the past, we used our technologies to treat devasting diseases like Parkinson’s Disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, or COVID-19 in cellular and animal models. Recently, we developed a synthetic protein to package and transfer RNA into target cell types. With this tool, we were able to express reporter and CRISPR proteins in up to 99% of cells. We now seek to further improve this technology by screening multiple configurations of the transfer protein, by programming target cell types, and by applying the technology to different cellular, ex vivo and in vivo preclinical models.

PhD position | Sustainable Energy Materials | Electrochemistry

We test novel catalysts for sustainable energy conversion processes such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells or electrolyzers, H2O2 production, or electrochemical CO2 reduction. To do so, the stability of newly developed catalysts is of pressing concern. You will continue our research line around stability assessment of novel catalysts by electrochemical flow cell measurements that will be coupled to on-line analytics (c.f. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-019-0555-5). Specifically, an in-house designed flow cell is coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the stability against dissolution will be assessed. This will be done with collaboration partners around the world. The workflow spans from analytical chemistry to material science and engineering. There is no need for previous knowledge in the described fields but a strong motivation to learn and push the boundaries of our current knowledge further. We are looking for an individu-al with a high willingness to take initiative and motivation to start her/his career at TUM.
