The Max Planck Institute of Biophysics is a leading international research institute that uses biophysical, biochemical and computational methods to investigate the structure, dynamics and function of cellular systems at the molecular scale. It consists of four scientific departments, multiple research groups and scientific core facilities, with about 200 employees from more than 25 countries.

The Image Processing group in the Department of Molecular Sociology aims to facilitate in situ structural analysis by developing novel algorithms for cryo electron tomography and subtomogram averaging. Our method development focuses on integrating contextual information provided either directly within the tomogram or by other sources (molecular dynamics, mass spectrometry) into subtomogram averaging routines (for examples, see our latest work on in situ structural analysis of Sars-CoV-2; DOI: 10.1126/science.abd5223).

Your profile

  • Bachelor-Degree
  • Strong programming skills in C++
  • Experience with HPC programming, especially OpenMPI/CUDA, is a plus
  • Experience with unit tests is a plus
  • Proficiency in English

Our offer

The Department of Molecular Sociology advertises a Student Assistant position (m/f/d) with potential continuation as a master thesis. Topic: Maintaining current framework (written in C++ ) for subtomogram averaging and extending it by adding new functionalities.

The working hours per week and contract duration will be subject to an individual agreement but with a maximum of 20 hours per week and 80 hours per month. There is a possibility for an extension to a Master project. The work can be done fully remotely and with flexible working hours during the day but due to the regulations of payroll requirements the place of residence needs to be within Germany during the employment.
