The new research will build on this work, specifically devoted to further improving other poorly constrained processes with the aid of a set of Large Eddy Simulations and other higher-order turbulence closure methods. This work will involve running new simulations to generate training data, using Machine Learning techniques to infer modifications to the mixing parameterizations, implementing the scheme in a global circulation model (MOM6), and evaluating the new parameterization within a global-scale climate model. The work is part of a larger project, M2LInES, covering eleven institutions. The overall goal is to reduce climate model biases at the air-sea/ice interface by improving subgrid physics in the ocean, sea ice and atmosphere components of existing coarse ( to 1) resolution IPCC-class climate models, and their coupling, using machine learning. The postdoc will be expected to collaborate with other postdocs at Princeton and with other members of the M2LInES project across multiple institutions. These clocks drive physiological processes and behaviors in coordination with the day-night cycle. Recent work has provided evidence that the circadian clock regulates immune functions in coordination with the day-night cycle. However, the underlying mechanisms by which the circadian clock drives rhythms in immunity are ill-defined. The Brooks lab seeks to mechanistically determine circadian clock regulation of innate immune functions at the intestinal epithelial barrier. Forming the first line of defense, the intestinal epithelium must acquire nutrients from the diet while maintaining harmony with a vast consortium of microorganisms known collectively as the microbiota. Endemic to the epithelium are specialized epithelial and immune cell types that produce antimicrobial proteins, bolster the epithelial barrier, and coordinate immune responses. These fundamental functions of innate immunity are regulated by the time of day. The Brooks lab is seeking a postdoctoral candidate or more senior researcher to characterize the impact of clocks across the intestinal epithelial barrier on host defense. The Sood Group is exploring research questions in the areas of nanoscale thermal transport, ultrafast science, and microelectronics, with an eye towards applications in energy-efficient computing, thermal management, energy storage and conversion. We are seeking candidates with hands-on experience in building and using optical and ultrafast (time-resolved) laser setups, for experiments aimed at measuring and visualizing heat transport at the nanoscale, energy-transfer dynamics in low-dimensional materials, energy-efficient switching pathways in nanoelectronics, and atomistic structural dynamics in next-generation electronic materials and devices. A strong technical background in at least one of the above areas is required; additionally, experience with nanofabrication and/or assembly of nanomaterials is a plus but not required. Essential skills for this role include the ability to design, assemble, and align optical setups built around femtosecond pulsed lasers, integrate such setups with measurement instrumentation, write programs for remote data acquisition using LabVIEW/python/MATLAB etc. and data analysis. In addition, candidates should have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate the ability to write technical articles as evidenced by a strong publication record that could include preprints. We are especially interested in candidates that enjoy working in teams and mentoring junior lab members.
