DescriptionThe Baxter Lab in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania is
seeking exceptional candidates to fill a postdoctoral research position to perform preclinical
translational research. The Baxter lab (https://www.med.upenn.edu/orl/baxterlab/) is focused on
improving rehabilitative care following soft-tissue injuries to restore functional outcomes. Our lab
has NIH funded research projects using small animal models and patient cohorts to maximize
our research impact on clinical care. This postdoctoral research opportunity will identify
precision rehabilitation strategies that promote tendon healing and preserve skeletal muscle
following Achilles tendon ruptures in an established rat model. This project has direct clinical
translation and the successful candidate will work closely with our clinical collaborators to
maximize the clinical impact of this research.
This postdoctoral research position provides a unique opportunity for extensive interdisciplinary
interactions between several groups at Penn, including leaders in small animal models, muscle
physiology, tendon healing, and clinical care. The successful candidate will be expected to
submit multiple papers as 1st author, present their findings at scientific conferences, and mentor
graduate and undergraduate researchers. We invite interested candidates with diverse
backgrounds and training in bioengineering, rehabilitation, physical therapy, kinesiology, and
other relevant fields to apply.
QualificationsAll applicants should have either a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree
in relevant research areas. Candidates with training in physical therapy are highly desirable.
The successful applicant will be provided mentoring support while they work independently and
supervise research staff to perform clinically impactful research. Candidates must have
excellent oral and written communication skills in English, be able to maintain good
documentations of their work, and have a strong work ethic. Preference will be given to
applicants with a track record of scientific productivity. Candidates from underrepresented
groups in the biomedical sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
