Scholarships in the Netherlands

Choosing to study or pursue a research career in the Netherlands connects you to one of Europe’s most progressive, highly internationalized, and academically prestigious environments. The Dutch higher education system is internationally revered for its interactive, problem-based learning model and its pioneering role in offering English-taught degrees. Securing a university qualification or an academic contract in the Netherlands delivers profound value, blending high-caliber research opportunities with exceptional post-graduation career mobility.

The fundamental value of securing a degree or an academic role in the Netherlands stems from the country’s unique combination of global academic prestige and highly attractive employment conditions for international researchers.

For degree seekers, competitive funding programs like the NL Scholarship (formerly the Holland Scholarship) or institutional awards like the Delft Global Scholarships provide major financial support toward tuition and living costs. For postgraduate researchers, the Netherlands is one of the premier destinations globally because PhD candidates are not treated as students—they are hired as professional staff members under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten).

These positions offer highly competitive, rising monthly salaries, a guaranteed 13th-month bonus, holiday allowances, and full employment benefits. Furthermore, the Dutch corporate and academic ecosystems are deeply intertwined, giving you direct access to research funding and career placements at major multinational headquarters located in the country, such as Philips, ASML, Shell, and Unilever. Additionally, international graduates can take advantage of the “Orientation Year” (Zoekjaar) visa, which grants 12 months to find a high-skilled job in the country’s booming, English-friendly labor market.
