The Department of Sociology – Centre for Demography, Family and Health at the University of Antwerp is looking for an enthusiastic and capable postdoctoral researcher (m/f/x) (100%) for a project in the field of Health Sociology/Public Health. The Joint Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes is a large-scale European project that aims to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in EU countries, both at individual and societal level. JACARDI will implement validated best practices and/or (cost-)effective interventions in countries in the form of pilot studies, complementing and strengthening existing policies and programmes. Additionally, candidates are encouraged to develop new initiatives around chronic disease care in Belgium and abroad.

Function

  • You will be part of an interdisciplinary, scientific research team. In this team, you carry out the following scientific research tasks, among others:
    • You co-coordinate the data collection and analysis for the pilot projects of one of the work packages (on patient pathways) of JACARDI.
    • You will analyse Belgian health insurance data on process outcomes of chronic care.
  • You co-coordinate ongoing quantitative research projects on chronic care within the interdisciplinary research team.
  • You initiate new project applications on (the data on) chronic disease care in Belgium and abroad.
  • You publish scientific articles and present at scientific conferences related to the research projects.
  • You take on a limited package of teaching and research support tasks for the Centre for Demography, Family and Health (e.g. supervising doctoral and master’s students, giving a guest lecture, supervising a working lecture, etc….).

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in Sociology, Medical Sciences, Public Health or in another relevant domain.
  • You have a good and working knowledge of quantitative research methods and analysis techniques, and experience with R and/or other statistical software.
  • Experience working with (1) health insurance data, (2) trial data and/or (3) longitudinal data is an asset.
  • You are quality-oriented, with integrity, creative and collaborative. At the same time, you show a sense of initiative and independence.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the educational vision of the University of Antwerp.
  • Your research skills are in line with faculty and university research policy.
  • You are fluent in Dutch and have a solid (written) knowledge of English.
  • You are strongly motivated to perform high-quality research within the above-mentioned research domain.
  • You are driven to write your research results in scientific articles.

We offer

  • We offer an appointment as a postdoctoral researcher for a period of 1 year – extendable to 4 years after favourable evaluation.
  • The anticipated start date is 1 November 2023 at the earliest.
  • Your monthly salary will be calculated according to the scales for Contract Research Staff.
  • You will receive ecocheques, internet connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of your commute by public transport.
  • You will work mainly on the city campus of the University of Antwerp, in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
  • You will be part of an interdisciplinary and inter-university team.
  • You will contribute to a highly socially relevant field, carrying out research for and collaborating with stakeholders such as Domus Medica, the InterMutualist Agency, etc.
