About the department

At the Department of Applied Information Technology, critical and interdisciplinary research is conducted in an international environment of the highest quality with great relevance to the surrounding society. Our researchers are in the midst of the debate to help explain and problematize IT- and society-related challenges linked to the digitalization of society.

We develop the individual’s knowledge and ability to analyze, understand and handle various aspects of IT as well as the interaction between human and technology in areas such as human-computer interaction, Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, digital innovation, e-Health, mobile communication, robots, social media and IT in schools and teaching. We provide education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level anchored in research and the development of society.

The department is located at the knowledge-intensive Lindholmen, and has a well-developed collaboration with both business and public sector as well as the civil society.

About the division of Human Computer Interaction

In a world where technology is constantly present, it is important to understand this presence and how it affects us. The purpose of the division is to contribute to a sustainable and enjoyable way of living with technology. Therefore, the research at the division primarily focuses primarily on digital wellbeing and health. The staff carries out various types of design research and analytical studies of empirical conditions, drawing upon multidisciplinary perspectives and involving people with backgrounds in computer science, applied IT, and interaction design. Research, education and collaboration take place in an integrated manner and the employees work closely together in a research team, but also in collaboration with colleagues from other divisions in the department and with colleagues at the Division of Interaction Design at The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IT Faculty of University of Gothenburg/Chalmers.

The division of Human Computer Interaction is a newly started division under expansion, where we recruit strategically to strengthen our competence in user-focused and design-oriented research.

Job assignments

The person hired is expected to independently and together with other employees conduct research of a high international standard and report research findings in journals and at conferences. The person hired is expected to be an active and engaged team member with a strong interest in contributing to the research team’s mutual goals, in addition to their own academic career.

The division of HCI has recently initiated the ”Appademy” (https://hci-gu.github.io/appademin/), in order to make our expertise in studies, design and programming of digital services available to other researchers within the University of Gothenburg. The employee is expected to be able to contribute to this activity.

Work tasks also include working with education at both basic and advanced level in the field of HCI. The tasks include planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision of students and doctoral students. An important part of the position is also to develop education and courses of relevance to HCI and related areas. Administrative tasks related to education will also be part of the work tasks.

Eligibility

The eligibility for employment as a teacher is stated in chapter 4, sections 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg’s employment procedure. Qualifying to be employed is the one who has demonstrated educational skill, has obtained a doctorate in subjects such as Human Computer Interaction, Interaction Design or equivalent, or has equivalent scientific competence or any other skill that is important in the view of the content of the employment and the duties that are to be included.

Assessment

In the appointment, equal scrutiny will be given to the degree of scientific- and teaching aptitude.

Scientific proficiency must be documented through international scientific publication in the field of Human Computer Interaction and Interaction Design, such as for example CHI, MobileHCI, NordiCHI, CSCW. The applicant should have documented experience working with design or development of new services and artefacts, where experience within health and well-being are a merit. Assessment of scientific proficiency includes the ability to independently plan, initiate and conduct research, the ability to collaborate in development and research as well as contribute to a research environment and the international scientific community. Successful work on obtaining external funds is a merit.

When assessing pedagogical skills, special emphasis is placed on work with teaching within HCI, Interaction Design and related areas. Assessment of pedagogical skills will include the candidate’s experience of planning, implementation, management, evaluation, supervision and examination, as well as course development and development of educational materials and similar educational activities. Both pedagogical and educational skills and experience must be well documented so that quality also can be assessed.

Formal training in higher education teaching or equivalent is a merit. Applicants who lack formal training in higher education teaching or equivalent, are expected to undergo such, or to gain equivalent knowledge, within one year from the date of employment.

Documented ability and skill to collaborate with others and to lead and administer teaching and research, and to inform, to cooperate with the surrounding community and to work for the utilization of the university’s research will be deemed meriting.

We are looking for an independent person who is analytical, driven and responsible.

Applicants should have very good knowledge of English, both written and oral. Documented experience of teaching in English is a requirement. Applicants who don´t speak Swedish are expected to work actively to learn Swedish since the work is conducted in an environment characterized by internationalization but with Swedish as the official language.

The university will through this recruitment make a holistic assessment of aptitude and skills and select the applicant which is deemed to have the best pre-requisites to conduct and develop current tasks of the position, interact and collaborate with other staff, as well as contributing to a positive development of the division, the teaching at the department and the work in general.

Employment

The position is a permanent employment at 100 % of full-time, with placement at the Department of Applied IT, the Division of Human-Computer Interaction. Probationary employment is applied for all permanent employments.
Start date 1st of February 2022 or according to agreement.
