A position as Professor in plant pathology is vacant in the Department of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala.  Our department provides a dynamic and international research environment comprising experts who conduct fundamental and applied research on plant-microbe interactions, mycology, microbial ecology and evolution, as well as biodiversity. Central themes are forest and plant pathology, and nutrient and carbon cycling in agricultural and forest ecosystems. About half of the research in the department is in the area of pathology of agricultural crops and forest trees, and the department is a hub of plant pathology at SLU. There are two units devoted to plant pathology research with relevance for agricultural crop production, one focused on plant pathology and one on epidemiology. The successful candidate for the position will lead the unit in plant pathology. Current research in this unit includes plant-fungal interactions, disease resistance, plant defence, as well as biological control. The department is located in the SLU BioCenter, which offers an excellent research environment within the life sciences and modern infrastructure, including plant growth facilities. Researchers within the department are active in the SLU Centre for Biological Control (CBC), a platform for researchers at SLU performing research on sustainable control strategies. The department also has access to the national infrastructure SciLifeLab, that offers expertise and platforms for “omics technologies” as well as computational services. The department is responsible for teaching plant pathology for agronomy students as well as in the master programme ”Plant Biology for Sustainable Production” and within courses in mycology and forest pathology.

Subject area

The subject plant pathology comprises basic and applied issues with a focus on agricultural crops. The subject includes, for example, plant-microbial interactions, genetics of plant pathogens, disease resistance and biological control, with significance for crop production and plant health in agriculture.

Duties

Within the subject area for the position, the professor is expected to:

  • develop a strong research environment with internationally recognized and successful research with relevance for Swedish agriculture
  • manage and support a successful research team
  • apply for external research funding from national and international sources
  • develop and maintain national and international network in academia and relevant industry and society
  • collaborate with researchers within and outside SLU
  • develop, lead and participate in teaching and supervision of students at all levels
  • supervise PhD students
  • contribute to the strategic development of the department and faculty
  • disseminate research findings and contribute relevant knowledge to society.

 Qualifications

The candidate shall:

  • have a PhD degree and have the competence as associate professor (docent) or have equivalent academic qualifications
  • be scientifically skilled within the subject area of the position
  • have demonstrated a proven ability to lead and develop a successful research group
  • be pedagogically skilled
  • be able to communicate well in English both in writing and orally.

Assessment criteria

Assessment of the candidate’s suitability for employment  as professor will be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the qualifications required for the position .

The assessment of research expertise will take the following into account:

  • previous and current research
  • visions for future research
  • ability to independently initiate, lead and develop novel research
  • ability to successfully obtain external research funds.

The assessment of teaching expertise will consider:

  • planning, conducting and evaluating teaching
  • experience of supervision and examination of undergraduate students
  • experience of supervision and examination of doctoral students
  • pedagogic vision
  • ability and capacity to integrate research and a scientific approach in teaching.

Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s expertise and experience in:

  • managing and developing academic units and staff
  • interacting with relevant stakeholders and society
  • dissemination of information on research and development projects.

The assessment of the applicant´s documented teaching expertise will be given the same consideration as the assessment of the documented research expertise.

Primary emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s research expertise in the subject area and the capacity to conduct the specified duties.

After meeting the qualification requirements, emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.
