Aalto University School of Engineering invites applications for:

Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in Management of Real Estate

Job description:

We seek for an ambitious and enthusiastic professor in Management of Real Estate.

Requirements and evaluation process:

The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level. The Aalto tenure track principles are explained at https://www.aalto.fi/en/tenure-track.

Applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in a discipline relevant for real estate management and should demonstrate excellent research potential in addition to good teaching ability. A successful candidate contributes to cutting-edge research and education in real estate management and has a solid science-based methodological background. The Real Estate Research Group is a multidisciplinary group that includes experts in e.g., real estate law, real estate economics and valuation, real estate finance as well as real estate business, and we are seeking to appoint an assistant professor to strengthen our profile in the management of real estate. Examples of suitable research focus include (but are not limited to) facility management, corporate real estate management, asset management or property management. The position is targeting researchers focusing on the real estate, and explicitly delineates the management of urban development and planning outside the scope of the position.

Following Aalto University’s strategy, we are looking for a person whose research and teaching interests relate to University-level focus areas of human-centred living environment, digitalisation, and sustainable use of natural resources. Societies are facing grand challenges, such as rapid urbanisation and land degradation under changing climate, management of the finite land resources, and widespread wasteful use of resources. The new professorship strengthens our ability to address these challenges through world class research and generation of high impact toward sustainable future societies.

Furthermore, the applicant should be willing and able to foster active teaching collaboration at the department, be able to acquire external research funding from Finnish and international sources and be able to demonstrate potential regarding the societal impact of research. For foreign candidates, the language requirement is fluency in written and spoken English. The recruited candidate will be encouraged to learn Finnish.

Evaluation at the Assistant Professor level follows the Tenure track system of Aalto University and is mainly based on research merits as well as the applicant’s potential to develop into a world class scientist. In all levels of the tenure track system, a professor is expected to perform high quality research and teaching at post-graduate, graduate and undergraduate levels, to be an active member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Advancements in the tenure track are based on scheduled performance assessments, which consider the candidate’s merits in all these areas.

Research environment: The position is located in the Department of Built Environment, see http://builtenv.aalto.fi/en/. The department runs a Master’s Programme in Real Estate Economics with 150 students https://www.aalto.fi/en/study-options/masters-programme-in-real-estate-economics in which the candidate is expected to develop and teach courses. In addition, the Group is involved in a joint Master’s Programme Urban Studies and Planning, and in a new Bachelor’s Programme Real Estate Economics and Geoinformatics, and there may also be some teaching and course development expectations.

The Department of Built Environment is an internationally oriented community that has 30 professors and more than 210 employees from 18 countries. The department is further divided into five units focusing on the following themes: real estate economics, water and environmental engineering, spatial planning and transportation engineering, geoinformatics, and measurement and modelling of built environments. The announced position is part of the Real Estate Economics Group, see https://www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-built-environment/real-estate-economics-0. Currently, the Department has 30 professors, of which 11 in Real Estate Economics Group, including one joint professor with Aalto School of Business.
