At the Department of Philosophy, a position as a PhD research fellow in philosophy is available. The planned starting date is no earlier than 1 November 2022. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years.

The Department of Philosophy has about 70 full-time and part-time employees, including about 10 PhD and postdoctoral positions. The department offers teaching at the bachelor’s level in philosophy and rhetoric, and at the master’s and PhD level in philosophy. In addition, it is responsible for running all the University of Bergen’s Examen philosophicum courses. The research at the department spans a wide area. Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian master’s degree or an equivalent foreign degree in philosophy. It is a prerequisite that the master’s degree is obtained before the application deadline expires. Applicants that document education other than a Norwegian Master’s degree are assessed in accordance with requirements from the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) and the guidelines of the Faculty of Humanities.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have good collaboration skills.
  • Applicants must master English, written and oral.
  • Competence in Norwegian is an advantage.

Applicants will be evaluated according to admission requirements in The Faculty of Humanities’ PhD Program pt. 2.1.

In assessing the applications, the greatest emphasis is placed on the scientific quality of the project, but the professional qualifications of the applicants will also be considered. The project must fit within one of the research groups at the department. In cases where ranked applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, strategic considerations will be considered. The applicants’ motivation and personal eligibility will also be considered.

About the PhD position:

The main goal of PhD positions is to complete a PhD degree, which qualifies for independent research activities and for other forms of employment that requires special competence. The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, where 25 % of the time is compulsory work related to teaching, dissemination and administration. A substantial part of a possible compulsory work period will include teaching, guidance and assessment work at the Examen philosophicum and/or other introductory courses at the Faculty of Humanities. A plan for this part of the position is developed in collaboration with the Department at the very beginning of the employment period.

Candidates who have previously had a doctoral scholarship at the University of Bergen are not eligible for employment.

The employment period can be reduced if the person who has been hired previously has been employed in a recruitment position.

Appointment to the position requires that you have your daily workplace at the University of Bergen and comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any given time.

About the research training

The research fellow must participate in the faculty’s educational program for a PhD degree within a time frame of 3 years, which among other things includes a training part of 20 credits, requirements for annual progress reporting and a mid-term evaluation halfway through the research fellowship period. It is a prerequisite that the applicant meets the requirements for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Humanities.
