PhD researcher, Politics & Public Governance research group

he Politics & Public Governance research group of the Political Science Department is looking for a full-time (100%) Ph.D. researcher (48m).

You will be involved in a project funded by the Flemish Research Council that investigates rankings of public services, such as schools. We want to examine whether such rankings can enhance or weaken citizens’ knowledge of and trust in public services. Moreover, we want to investigate how the presentation of such rankings (e.g. with added visual cues or symbols) can alter citizens’ interpretations. In this research, we work with innovative quantitative and experimental methods, including online and eye-tracker experiments. The project has significant ramifications for how governments should interact with citizens. You will do your research in a vibrant, leading research group in the field of public administration. In the Shanghai ranking of the academic discipline ‘Public Administration,’ the University of Antwerp ranks first in Belgium and twentieth worldwide.

PhD position in historical household finance_WP1

As PhD candidate you will work on the creation of the Hisfindex – a historical version of the Global Findex that measures financial inclusion in the world today. The aim is to find out which financial services were used by households between 1920 and 2020, including for instance payment services, various types of savings, public and private insurance, consumer credit, mortgages, and other loans obtained with or without the intermediation of banks. Recently, a pilot study for the Netherlands has been carried out. The purpose of your project is first to validate and extend the Hisfindex to the case of Belgium and second to investigate how the increased access to financial services affected the financial situation of households. Did they become more financially resilient? Or did living conditions remain unaltered despite the shifting balance between the public and private supply of financial services? To answer these questions you will work in close collaboration with other team members of The Social History of Finance. Your research will result in the identification of key junctures in the long-term development of household finance in Belgium and The Netherlands. It will contribute to the historical financial literature as well as provide insights to key questions surrounding financial literacy and resilience today.

PhD position in historical business finance_WP4

As PhD candidate you will study the development of financial markets in Antwerp and by extension Belgium between 1795 and 2020. You will investigate the size and functioning of capital and money markets and assess their use by local firms and households. Were they accessible to all, or only to large companies. And if so, what alternatives did excluded groups have at their disposal to manage cash flows or finance their investments? Furthermore, what was the relation between peer to peer markets and financial intermediaries such as banks. Were they complements or competitors and how did this evolve over time.

Postdoc position Computational neurobiology lab

We are the Computational Neurobiology lab and address fundamental questions in chromatin organization, epigenetics and brain biology. We develop machine learning approaches for large-scale data integration and reconstruct cis-regulatory networks to understand how a cell “chooses” its fate. In particular, we focus on the role of chromatin organization in neuronal cell fate specification and neurodegenerative disease, aiming to bring results of fundamental research to the clinic.

The successful candidate will work on the subproject Panorama, Diorama and Cosmorama: Performing History and Geography.

This subproject will study how show people appropriated images from around the world and in what ways they contributed to a growing visual literacy amongst ordinary people across the social spectrum. Travelling entertainment ‘opened up’ the world to a distinctively broad population regarding the gradual globalisation of capitalism, imperial routes and new means of transportation, and the consequent unprecedented mobility of artists, materials and knowledge. Popular attractions such as panoramas, dioramas, cosmoramas, magic lantern shows and wax museums introduced people to pictures of faraway times and places, as well as international heroes both contemporary and historical. History and modernity often mixed in these spectacles, which featured historical monuments, legendary battles, and illustrated travel stories. While these displays were meant to exoticise and entice, they also familiarised audiences with certain tropes related to the world’s history and present, captured in particular visual strategies and supported by carefully scripted viewing experiences.
