ApplyPostdoc position in the molecular studies of bacterial functional amyloids VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology POST-DOCTORAL

A fully funded Postdoc position is available in the lab Structural & Molecular Microbiology at VIB – Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, to work on an FWO project studying the nucleation, cross-reactivity, and structure of bacterial functional amyloids (FA).

Amyloids are aggregative protein or peptide fibrils best known for their implication in a range of neurodegenerative illnesses. The self-assembly into cross-ß-structured fibrils is however not restricted to the off-pathway protein misfolding events, but also found as the native conformation of a wide range of  pro- and eukaryotic proteins referred to as FA. FAs produced by prokaryotes are often related to the persistence and virulence of bacterial biofilms. Despite their importance, little is known regarding the FA ultrastructure and their mechanism of formation.

ApplyPhD student in modulating the maize growth regulatory network to achieve climate resilient crops VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology PHD

The global demand for plant-derived food, feed, and biomaterials is rising despite the decline in arable acreage. Furthermore, crop productivity is hampered by climate change, of which drought is the most devastating. Therefore, there is an obvious and urgent need to improve crop productivity and climate resilience. The goal of our research team is to address this challenge by deciphering the instructor networks that govern plant organ size as it is an important yield component that is also severely impacted by drought. As a result of using both Arabidopsis and maize as model plants, we successfully translated basic knowledge on growth to developing higher-yielding, field-grown crop varieties. Understanding growth regulatory networks will have a major impact on agriculture, by further enabling our ability to direct plant breeding and by enhancing our success rate in designing higher-yielding crops.

ApplyPhD student in Unfolded Protein Response in gut homeostasis VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research PHD

The VIB Center for Inflammation Research is part of the VIB Life Sciences institute and is connected to Ghent University. Our center focuses on the mechanisms driving infection and inflammation.

The Sophie Janssens lab is looking for a motivated Ph.D. student to join the “Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) in gut homeostasis” team. We are specifically interested in the role of IRE1b, a goblet-specific sensor of the UPR, in the maintenance of the protective intestinal mucin barrier. In contrast to its well-known closely related paralogue IRE1α, the function of IRE1β is poorly understood. We recently identified a specific interactor for IRE1b in goblet cells that tunes its function towards a regulatory function in mucus homeostasis. To understand the importance of their interaction to coordinate mucus homeostasis, we generated a unique set of genetic mouse models to study the in vivo processes regulating gut barrier homeostasis. We will apply a wide range of technologies, amongst others cell signaling studies, RNA sequencing, flow cytometry, and high content microscopy. The candidate will mainly apply these technologies to in vivo model systems, including models of gastrointestinal infection, and set up organoid systems to study how mucin-specific UPR signaling proteins regulate the correct maturation of mucins. You will join a team of one postdoctoral researcher and one technician with whom you will work in close collaboration.

ApplyPostdoctoral researcher “Microfluidic single cell sorting of circulating tumor cells” VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology POST-DOCTORAL

Within the context of precision medicine, molecular characterization of tumors is playing an increasingly larger role in diagnosis, prognosis, and patient stratification. Liquid biopsy, the detection of tumor-derived material in blood, provides key advantages over the current gold standard of direct tissue sampling. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) play a pivotal role in the metastatic process. Both clinical and experimental evidence has shown that CTCs arise early during disease progression, which makes them interesting targets for the interception of metastatic dissemination. For high-quality analysis of CTC using single-cell RNA sequencing techniques, cellular enrichment using a gentle sorting mechanism is essential.

ApplyScientist Position in Bioinformatics, Neuroscience and Drug Discovery VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research BIO IT

The Laboratory for the Research of Neurodegenerative Diseases headed by prof. Bart De Strooper is a vibrant environment where key issues related to Alzheimer’s disease are tackled. We are currently looking for a highly skilled and motivated bioinformatician to join our multidisciplinary project on the cellular response to Alzheimer’s pathology (De Strooper and Karran, Cell, 2016).

In this project, we will investigate why some people remain protected against Alzheimer’s Disease despite the presence of amyloid plaques. Understanding why some people are resilient to Alzheimer’s disease will help us to identify new drug targets. The candidate will integrate data from spatial transcriptomics, in situ sequencing, and single-cell RNAseq from multiple projects and models in the lab to prioritize targets for further drug discovery. The work will be performed in collaboration with our spin-off biotech company Muna Therapeutics, which develops first-in-class therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases.

You will join a young international team and you will contribute to a collaborative, interactive, diligent, and science-driven culture in order to meet milestones set by the lab head.

ApplyStaff Scientist in Angiogenesis and Vascular Metabolism VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology SENIOR SCIENTIFIC

Current anti-angiogenesis therapies (AATs), by targeting the pro-angiogenic factor VEGF, suffer resistance and insufficient efficacy. The Carmeliet lab explores opportunities to overcome these limitations and to improve AAT by focusing on endothelial cell metabolism, endothelial heterogeneity and in particular, endothelial immunity. Recent projects, combining single-cell transcriptomics with bulk multi-omics (transcriptomics, (epi)-genomics, proteomics & metabolomics) revealed novel insights in endothelial cell metabolism and heterogeneity in health and disease that can help design novel AAT strategies.
