| The Orthopaedic Biomedical Engineering (OrthoBME) Laboratory is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to help lead an NIH-funded observational clinical study of osteoarthritic (OA) pain in privately owned horses with naturally occurring fetlock OA. Equine OA shares important features with human OA, including gradual development and a poor relationship between joint damage and symptom severity. This study aims to identify reliable and valid measures of OA pain in horses that may translate to human OA. Following enrollment by the UF College of Veterinary Medicine, our assessment team conducts on-site testing at farms and ranches in the Gainesville-Ocala area. Assessments include neural processing, autonomic function, activity, gait mechanics, and other physiologic measures. Findings will be compared with data from ongoing human OA pain studies at the UF Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence. The OrthoBME Lab studies how chronic joint degeneration contributes to pain and disability using animal and human patient data. Our collaborative, team-based environment values strong communication, willingness to learn, and the ability to work with and mentor others. The post-doctoral fellow will serve as the day-to-day scientific leader for the project and work closely with graduate students. Responsibilities include coordinating study activities, mentoring students in data collection and analysis, supporting personnel training and calibration, and maintaining data quality and protocol standardization. Ideally, the fellow will lead the quantitative sensory testing (QST) component, adapting human QST protocols for horses; training will be provided. The position also offers an opportunity to develop an independent research program in veterinary populations, contribute to manuscripts and grant proposals, and build skills for a career leading a research team. | |||
