Despite the profound legal, societal, and political implications of Holocaust memory in Europe, there has been remarkably little research into the historical formation of this foundational collective memory and the key actor involved in shaping it. Increased institutionalized deployment of the Holocaust is to a significant degree driven by an international intergovernmental organization called International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) – the full history of the IHRA’s development, working method, and legal influence is however almost untold. With the overall goal of contributing to a more inclusive European collective memory, the principal aim of the project MORALMEM is to write a legal history of the IHRA based on previously unexplored archives. The project will critically evaluate how the organization’s development has contributed to the current political and legal framing of Holocaust memory in Europe. By methodologically combining historical archival analysis with legal and political inquiry and insights from the field of memory studies.  The Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki is the leading Finnish institute of legal education. University Researcher in Philosophy / Philosophy of ReligionOpens in a new tab

Faculty of Theology

The Centre of Excellence in Meliorist Philosophy of Suffering (MePhiS), funded by the Research Council of Finland at the University of Helsinki and Tampere University, invites applications for one or two (1-2) fixed-term University Researcher positions for two years, starting in January, 2027 (or later, based on negotiations). The positions are open within MePhiS’s research teams: 1) Antitheodicy and the Methodology of Meliorist Philosophy of Suffering, and 2) Suffering and the Problem of Life in Contemporary Philosophy of Religion. Both teams are hosted by the Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki City Centre Campus. Submitting an application is interpreted as an expression of the applicant’s interest in working within either or both of these closely connected research teams. The applicant may also indicate their preference regarding the research team. MePhiS engages in philosophical and interdisciplinary scholarship that places the concept of suffering at the center of philosophical reflection and offers conceptual and argumentative tools for a deeper understanding of human engagement with affliction, starting from the meliorist (Lat. melior, better) idea that the world can and should be made better through active human efforts. According to meliorism, a positive outcome is neither guaranteed (optimism) nor impossible (pessimism). MePhiS aims at (1) reinterpreting ethical and other philosophical issues by emphasizing their entanglement with suffering; (2) integrating philosophical inquiries into suffering and meliorism with research emerging from key disciplines in the humanities, especially the history of ideas, literary studies, and theology and religious studies; and (3) critically renewing relevant philosophical and interdisciplinary methodology. As a research group within MePhiS, the group Antitheodicy and the Methodology of Meliorist Philosophy of Suffering serves the entire center by investigating, for example, conceptual issues concerning meliorism, suffering, and antitheodicy, and especially the methodologies of the philosophy of suffering. The group specifically focuses on examining, both historically and systematically, pragmatist and transcendental methodologies enabling an in-depth critical analysis and assessment of the prospects of antitheodicy in developing meliorist approaches to suffering. As a research group within MePhiS, the group Suffering and the Problem of Life in Contemporary Philosophy of Religion examines how both religious and secular perspectives in contemporary philosophy address suffering, mortality, and hope. The group explores and conceptualises fundamental ethical and existential problems concerning the human condition and the meaning of life in both individual and social contexts. Although the group’s main research focus is on contemporary debates, earlier forms of optimism and pessimism in modern philosophy are also potential research topics. Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications Applicants must hold a doctoral degree and have demonstrated track record of high-quality research and international publications, and other academic activities. We are looking for senior researchers with a background in philosophy and/or philosophy of religion (or relevant neighbouring fields).  A pre-existing interest in the general theme of MePhiS is an advantage. Candidates need to be able to write and publish independently and collaboratively. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to international academic activities, including high-quality peer-reviewed publications. A University Researcher typically has at least ca. five years of postdoctoral experience. In addition, applicants should possess ability to lead a research group, a track record of securing external funding, and the teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. The position is filled with a six-month trial period. The researcher will be responsible for Engaging in philosophical research on the above-described themes, e.g., investigating and developing conceptual analyses and methodologies of meliorist philosophy of suffering, or exploring ethical and existential problems concerning the human condition and the meaning of life in both individual and social contexts.Authoring academic publications on the topics mentioned aboveCollaborating with the other MePhiS members in theoretical work, including joint publications, as well as in the activities of the research group and the center as a whole;Providing research-based teaching and supervising dissertations.  What we offer The salary for the position will be based on level 6 or 7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual gross salary is €51,000 – €65,000. In Finnish universities, the teaching and research staff (app. 65% of total staff) have a special system regarding the free time equivalent to holiday. They belong to the 1,612 annual working hour system, in which the annual amount of paid holiday is ca. 5-6 weeks on average per year. The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki. The Centre of Excellence in Meliorist Philosophy of Suffering (MePhiS), funded by the Research Council of Finland at the University of Helsinki and Tampere University, invites application for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Study of Religion. The position is open within MePhiS’s research team Future, Futurelessness and Vernacular Responses to Suffering. The position is fix-term for three years starting in January 2027 or earlier/later as agreed MePhiS engages in philosophical and interdisciplinary scholarship that places the concept of suffering at the centre of philosophical reflection and offers conceptual and argumentative tools for a deeper understanding of human engagement with affliction, starting from the meliorist (Lat. melior, better) idea that the world can and should be made better through active human efforts. According to meliorism, a positive outcome is neither guaranteed (optimism) nor impossible (pessimism). The team Future, Futurelessness, and Vernacular Responses to Suffering (WP5) explores vernacular religious and non-religious encounters and responses—such as explanations, justifications, and imaginations—related to suffering. We are particularly interested in both empirical and theoretical approaches that address human and non-human death, climate change, and the loss of nature amidst an increasingly unpredictable future. Our aim is to understand how different groups engage with contemporary (poly)crises and whether these encounters reflect a melioristic stance toward suffering. We are especially searching for expertise that complements our present team’s competences.  The Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible forpursuing the research aims described above in the context of the Study of Religion;authoring scholarly publications independently and collaboratively on these topics;collaborating with other members of the MePhiS, including through joint publications and other research activities; andcontributing to teaching and administrative duties, amounting to approximately 5-10 % of the working time. Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications We are looking for a candidate with expertise in the empirical and theoretical Study of Religion in contemporary society, and interested in advancing the research aims described above. Postdoctoral Researcher in EconomicsOpens in a new tab

Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry

The Department of Economics and Management, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Helsinki, invites applications for a Postdoctoral position. The position is fixed term for two years with a six-month trial period and ideally starts around January 2027. The position is part of a new research project “Intergenerational Transitions in the Nordics (NEXT)” funded by Peter Wallenberg Foundation. The project is led by Professor Lucia Naldi at Jönköping University and Professor Pia Nilsson at the University of Helsinki. The research focuses on how institutional conditions, particularly inheritance and gift taxation, shape intergenerational farm succession and the subsequent development of farm businesses in Sweden and Finland. The postdoctoral researcher will be based at the University of Helsinki, Department of Economics and Management and the Agricultural Economics research group. The project studies how inheritance and gift taxation affect intergenerational ownership transitions and the consequences of these transitions for farm viability, investment, land-use continuity, and technological development. Sweden and Finland provide a highly relevant comparative setting: Sweden abolished inheritance and gift taxes in 2005, while Finland retains these taxes with relief mechanisms. The project uses this institutional contrast to examine the effects of transfer taxes on the timing of ownership transitions, the likelihood of within-family succession, and post succession outcomes. The research is based on harmonized longitudinal administrative register data from Sweden and Finland.  The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the construction of the Sweden–Finland empirical framework and conduct econometric analyses of intergenerational ownership transitions. The work will include identifying and dating ownership transitions, classifying transfer modes, distinguishing within-family from non-family transfers, and linking succession events to economic outcomes. The successful candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of empirical research and prepare peer-reviewed journal articles aimed at publication in highly ranked international journals. The postdoctoral researcher will be based at the University of Helsinki and will be an active member of the Agricultural Economics group in the Department of Economics and Management. The position involves close collaboration with the project team at Jönköping International Business School and participation in joint research activities, including workshops and collaborative research. The successful candidate will benefit from a dynamic research environment and collaboration across agricultural economics, family business, ownership and governance, entrepreneurship, and applied microeconomics, with opportunities for both individual and collaborative research, acquisition of external research funds, and supervision of MSc and PhD students. We seek candidates who will have completed a PhD in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related field, by the start of the position, preferably around January 2027. We are searching for a candidate with strong training in econometrics and longitudinal empirical methods. Experience working with administrative register data and/or large-scale linked individual-, owner-, property-, or firm-level data is a requirement for this research project. Experience with applied microeconomics, causal inference, event-study methods, or related longitudinal approaches will be considered an advantage.  The work requires independent thinking, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of an international research team. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute actively to the development of the project’s empirical framework and research outputs, while also developing their own research agenda and leading publications. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required. Knowledge of Swedish/Finnish is not a requirement but an advantage. The successful candidate is highly motivated to be present at the Viikki campus and will take an active role in the activities organized by the department and the research group. The position comes with some teaching responsibilities including teaching parts of an intermediate level course in production economics and parts of a Master level course in Production and Cost Theory. The overall share of teaching is about 10–15%. What we offerThe successful candidate will join an active and internationally oriented research environment within the Agricultural Economics group at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. The research group conducts high-quality research in agricultural and natural resource economics and applied microeconomics, with opportunities for collaboration with researchers at Jönköping International Business School and the Center for Family Entrepreneurship and Ownership (CeFEO). The project brings together complementary expertise in agricultural economics, family business, ownership transitions, entrepreneurship, and governance. The position offers opportunities for developing an independent research agenda, publishing in leading international journals, and building international networks through collaboration with project partners in Finland and Sweden. The postdoctoral researcher will work with high-quality administrative register data in secure research environments and contribute to comparative longitudinal research on intergenerational ownership transitions in agriculture. The position also offers opportunities to contribute to the development of new research projects and external funding applications. Terms of employmentThe salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be based on level 5 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel at the University of Helsinki. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary is typically around 3 600–3 800 euros per month depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki. Russian state-controlled media and social media platforms have been instrumental in disseminating conflicting narratives, accusing the West of both Western-centric colonialism and overly liberal migration policies. These narratives are not only targeted at Russian-speaking populations through Russian-language media but are also circulated across Europe through social media accounts, bots, and fake news sites in various European languages. This project will analyse how these narratives are constructed, disseminated, and adjusted to exploit specific societal vulnerabilities to fuel polarisation, undermine social cohesion, and erode trust in democratic institutions. By combining discourse analysis and media monitoring with case studies of significant migration-related events, the research will assess how migration narratives are tailored to specific European contexts and their role in creating political fragmentation and fostering extremist ideologies. Additionally, the project will evaluate the interplay between domestic migration policies in European states and the narratives promoted by Russia, highlighting vulnerabilities that facilitate external interference. What We Offer 36‑month full-time EU MSCA contract and fully funded doctoral positionSalary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the requirements from the European Commission related to the MSCA programme. Designed to curtail political opposition and dissent while promoting corruption and rent-seeking, these models are increasingly emulated across diverse political contexts to consolidate processes of autocratisation. Illiberal strategies include weakening judicial independence, politicizing courts, restricting media freedom, and reshaping state institutions through the appointment of loyalists and cronies to key decision-making positions. Beyond serving as a model of autocratisation and bad governance, Russia actively supports governments, political parties, and other European domestic actors seeking to undermine liberal democratic norms and institutions. The project will analyse the transnational dynamics of illiberal learning, focusing on the interaction between domestic and international actors in the diffusion of authoritarian strategies and governance practices across Russia and Europe. It will also examine how these practices are adapted to specific political, economic, and societal contexts, thereby contributing to the theorization of the rise of illiberalism and bad governance in Europe. What We Offer 36‑month full-time EU MSCA contract and fully funded doctoral positionSalary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the requirements from the European Commission related to the MSCA programme.
