We are offering one postdoc position to a highly motivated researcher with a background in geography and urban ecology with experience in modeling, GIS and data synthesis. Their work will determine how urban features drive species diversity, how species diversity and urban features are represented in soundscapes and how these relate to human health and wellbeing. They will use modeling approaches to combine natural and social science data. You will focus on developing and implementing mixed modeling approaches to test pathways through which structure–biodiversity relationships are linked to acoustic comfort–restoration outcomes. The models will integrate spatially-explicit structural complexity variables, landscape imperviousness variables, biodiversity (songbird) variables, and human restoration variables. We aim to produce maps of model predictions based on biodiversity indices, restoration variables in relation to urban green and built infrastructure.

PhD Stelle – Hörforschung Schwerpunkt Morphophysiologie der Cochlea
Unsere Hörschnecke, die Cochlea, hat ein besonderes, spiralförmiges Aussehen. Bis heute ist es allerdings unklar, welche physiologische Vorteile diese Schneckenform für das Hören bietet. In diesem, vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (SNSF) geförderten Projekt, führen wir Hörtests und MRI-gestützte Bildanalysen durch, um den Zusammenhang zwischen Anatomie und Funktion der Hörschnecke zu erforschen (www.exa-lab.org/research). Das Ziel dieses Projektes ist es nicht nur ein tieferes Verständnis zur Morphologie der Cochlea zu gewinnen, sondern auch praktische Anwendungen zur Verbesserung von Neuroprothesen (z.B. Cochlea-Implantate) und chirurgischen Methoden zu entwickeln.

Developing a forest-based Bioeconomy in Germany and Uruguay DE-URY-forest.
Project background:
This PhD position is part of an ambitious international project aimed at fostering a sustainable forest-based bioeconomy in Germany and Uruguay. The project focuses on the identification and assessment of tree species from the southern hemisphere that could enhance the biodiversity and resilience of forest ecosystems in Central Europe, particularly in light of climate change. Additionally, the project aims to develop innovative forest management strategies and value-added product pathways in both Germany and Uruguay, integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services into forest and agroforest systems. The project is comprised of three sub-projects. This announcement is for the Sub-Project 1: Forestry, Forest Management, and Agroforest Systems. The location of the work will be in Germany and Uruguay.
