The Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA), Faculty of Biosciences, at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant full-time, 2-year researcher position in fish nutrition, with possibilities for extension depending on available funding.

The researcher will participate in fish experiments funded by various collaborative projects as well as Foods of Norway (www.foodsofnorway.net), a centre for research-based innovation hosted by IHA which comprises partners with broad multidisciplinary expertise from three faculties at NMBU and 19 research and innovation partners from the forestry, aquacultural and agricultural sectors. Foods of Norway’s goal is to make Norwegian fish and animal farming industries more competitive and innovative by developing novel feed ingredients from bioresources and ensuring efficient feed resource utilization.

The position is linked to several of Foods of Norway’s spin-off projects such as Oil4Feed and the Nordic project NORDICFEED which focus on novel proteins produced from natural resources.

The research projects involve evaluating novel fish feed solutions in experiments with Atlantic salmon. The focus will be on ingredient processing, feed optimalization, feed manufacture, technical feed quality, growth performance and fish health. We seek a candidate with experience from nutritional experiments with monogastric animals, preferably fish, and who has documented research experience with processing and nutrition.

Main tasks

Major research tasks in the project will be:

  • To formulate diets and participate in the production of extruded or pelleted fish feed.
  • To design and conduct growth performance and health experiments with Atlantic salmon.
  • To study the impact of novel feed solutions on feed processing and manufacture, fish growth performance and health.
  • To participate in down-stream processing of novel feed ingredients.
  • To process and perform statistical analysis of data.
  • To generate scientific publications.

Competence

Required academic qualifications and experience

  • A PhD degree or equivalent in aquacultural, animal or biological science. Candidates from other disciplines, e.g. biorefinery processing or veterinary science, may also be considered.
  • Research experience with nutritional and physiological experiments with farmed monogastric animals or fish, preferably on salmonids.
  • Experience with feed optimalization and feed manufacture.
  • Experience with statistical analysis of data (e.g. use of R, Graphpad, SAS).
  • Hands-on experience with handling of animals/fish, collecting data and sampling of blood, organs and tissues for analysis of biological responses in nutritional studies.
  • Excellent knowledge of oral and written English

Desired experience

Experience with varying ingredient processing methods such as fractionation, air classification, solid state fermentation and some standard and advanced  laboratory methods is advantageous.

We are looking for a highly ambitious and creative person with good collaboration skills. It is important that you are organized, work efficiently and can deliver according to goals and milestones of the projects.

The candidate must not have any known allergies that could affect their work with feed, chemicals or fish. Irregular working hours must be expected in periods when experiments are running. A valid Norwegian driving licence is an advantage.
