Position as PhD Research Fellow available at the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo in the research group of Associate Professor Sandra Lopez-Aviles.

The fellowship is devoted to carrying out a project entitled “protein homeostasis, cell signaling and stress response”.

The employment will be for a period of 3 years, or for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

The candidate for this position will work on a project studying mechanisms of adaptation to stress conditions and maintenance of protein homeostasis (proteostasis).

Protein homeostasis, requires the coordinated action of a network of cellular pathways that monitor protein translation, folding, and degradation in order to ensure the integrity of the proteome. A loss of proteostasis is linked to aging and a number of diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. 

In this project, using the model organism Schizosaccharomyces pombe, the candidate will investigate the interplay between mTOR signaling and stress activated protein kinases (SAPKs) in the regulation of translation initiation and elongation, translation-coupled mRNA decay and the formation of stress granules. For this aim, the candidate will make use of classical yeast genetic and molecular methods, proteomics, live-cell microscopy and high-throughput sequencing technologies.

Qualification requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or a similar field.
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Extensive practical experience with molecular and cell biology methods is required.
  • Hands-on experience with yeast genetic models is a strong advantage.
  • Previous experience with advanced imaging techniques and imaging analysis will be valued.
  • Previous experience with high throughput sequencing methods will be valued.

Grade requirements:

The norm is as follows:

  • the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
