PhD

3-jarig PhD traject Computationele Modellen in Educatie

PhD

PhD Position in Systems and Control Theory for Energy-based Learning

Are you excited about developing new mathematical foundations for energy-efficient computing? Do you want to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of systems and control theory, optimization, circuit theory, and neuromorphic computing?

The University of Groningen is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to work on a fundamental research project on systems and control theory for learning in neuromorphic circuits. Neuromorphic computing is an analog, brain-inspired computing paradigm with the potential to drastically reduce energy consumption while enabling faster inference than conventional digital architectures. A major challenge, however, is the development and analysis of dedicated algorithms for training analog circuits directly from data.

In this PhD project, you will develop a novel system-theoretic framework for learning in analog circuits and dissipative networks. We will view learning as a feedback interconnection of continuous-time (circuit) dynamics and an optimization algorithm. The key idea is to develop algorithms that minimise cost functions inspired by notions of energy, leading to highly efficient, local learning rules.

PhD position Fair Climate Policy

Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking research that pushes the boundaries of science? Are you looking for a PhD position where you can translate your curiosity into concrete research results and a dissertation? Then the position of PhD candidate in Fair Climate Policy at the University of Groningen (RUG) and the Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) is exactly what you are looking for!

As a PhD candidate in Fair Climate Policy, you will have the opportunity, under supervision, to develop your own insights, collect data, and share your findings with both academic colleagues and practice and societal partners. Together with a motivated team, you will work on meaningful solutions and contribute to the future of your field.

Research project. The Netherlands faces major challenges in the field of sustainability. The current intensive use of natural resources leads to irreversible environmental damage, resource depletion, and further climate change. At the same time, climate action entails distributional effects and can exacerbate existing inequalities and impact the lives of citizens. This manifests itself in concerns regarding both the consequences of climate change and the impact of climate policy on social inequality and the quality of life of specific groups. Many citizens consider it important to protect the climate, the environment, and nature, and recognize climate change as a societal issue. However, there is disagreement regarding which solutions are most suitable. It is therefore important to understand how climate policy can be developed that is effective, but is also perceived as just, fair, and acceptable, and contributes to people’s quality of life. Policy that does not exclude people, but connects them. The project aims to develop psychological and sociological insights into what citizens view as fair and just solutions to climate change and the factors and circumstances that influence these perceptions. Additionally, the project aims to provide guidelines for policymakers for the development of policy that is perceived by citizens as (more) just, fair(er), and (more) acceptable, and contributes to the wellbeing of society.

Collaboration. This research project is a collaboration between the Environmental Psychology expertise group at the University of Groningen (RUG), specifically research into public acceptance of sustainable transitions, the Citizens and Government programme at the SCP, and the chair of Prof. Dr. Maroesjka Versantvoort on the role of values and meaning in people’s sustainability trade-offs (previous research by the SCP, “Between Sustainable Thinking and Sustainable Action”). The PhD candidate will receive a full-time appointment for 2 years at the RUG in Groningen (years 1 and 2) and subsequently a full-time appointment for 2 years at the SCP in The Hague (years 3 and 4). This collaboration offers a unique opportunity to leverage the knowledge and expertise of both organizations and to build rich experience in cross-institutional collaboration.

Why would you want this position?

  1. Making an impact: in this role, you contribute directly to scientific insights that address societal issues. Your research translates not only into publications but also into concrete solutions, ensuring a tangible impact.
  2. Personal development: you get the opportunity to develop yourself into an expert, with the support of experienced scientists. This combination of research and education offers ample opportunities for professional and personal growth.

The SCP works for the entire society. To do this as effectively as possible, we strive for a diversity of qualities, perspectives, and backgrounds in our teams. We also actively work on an organizational culture in which everyone feels welcome and can be themselves. For more information about the organization, see About the SCP | Netherlands Institute for Social Research.

Postdoc One Size Fits None: matching engagement to context

Dutch national policy and legislation has high expectations of “bottom-up” provisioning systems for essential services, such as care and energy, where citizens take active roles in the set-up and functioning of an initiative. This requires local civil servants to engage citizens in policy design, implementation, and governance on a broad range of topics as established by, for example, the Climate Agreement, the Environment and Planning Act, and the Act to strengthen participation at the local level. While there is no shortage of public participation approaches policy makers can use to structure their citizen engagement interventions, systematic knowledge of which approach works best, when, where, and for whom is lacking. Hence, in their efforts to engage citizens, local civil servants run the risk of flying blind, lacking insight into which, if any, are the most adequate tools in their local context – for the specific community, specific problem at hand, at the given level of policymaking, and in the given social, economic, historical, and cultural conditions. The research you conduct in this postdoc project will help ameliorate this situation.

PhD position Neuroscience

Understanding how patterns of neural activity give rise to behavior is a central challenge in neuroscience. Most of what we know about this relationship comes from rodent experiments performed under tightly controlled laboratory conditions. While these approaches are essential for identifying neural mechanisms, they capture only a fraction of the behavioral repertoire animals display in more complex environments.

Postdoctoral Researcher Urban Design and Inclusive Urban Mobility

Join an ambitious, multidisciplinary project at the crossroads of interaction and urban design, where your research can shape the vision of open and accessible cities! This position is part of the NWO-funded research project BEAT (Building Equitable Accessibility Together) , which started in January 2026.

Within the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, department of Spatial Planning we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher (0.8 – 1.0 FTE) on Inclusive mobility within BEAT NWO funded research project. Operating from the standpoint that mobility is essentially a subjective human experience, BEAT aims to investigate urban mobility barriers as they unfold in the daily activities of people. Rather than examining a specifi c mode of mobility (e.g., public transport, walking) or a single accessibility barrier, the focus of this project is the holistic experience of urban mobility in the daily lives of individuals with physical and cognitive diversities. The point of departure is “people”—their routines and travel behaviours, their daily frustrations with various mobility obstacles, and the impact of these hindrances on their personal, social, and professional lives. BEAT investigates a wide range of barriers that may be labelled as temporary or even mundane. Examples of such temporary-but-everyday barriers include construction sites and road works planned by municipalities, but also a variety of unplanned situations, such as improperly parked delivery vehicles, poorly placed planters and bikes on the sidewalk, unauthorised market stalls, and so forth. While each of these situations may be perceived as a temporary problem, collectively they form a permanent reality of how we experience our cities. These barriers signify an “informal” layer of inaccessibility superimposed on more structural or “formal” accessibility problems in the city. This informal layer is highly diverse, stems from many underlying causes and factors, and highlights a notable knowledge gap.
